Our Net Good goal methodology has two distinctly new elements compared to the scope of our previous carbon footprint approach.

Firstly we have greatly expanded the scope of our own impact.  To our own operational footprint we have added the footprint of our entire supply chain (our upstream footprint if you like) and also the footprint of the telecommunications and IT equipment we have sold or leased to our customers (our downstream, or product in life footprint).   …

What is Net Good?

For many years BT has focused on reducing its environmental impact. If you trace back through our archive of sustainability reports, you will see that we have been measuring our energy and carbon footprint and applying a succession of reduction targets to one or both since 1992. You will also be able to see that we have improved our performance on other measures too, such as total waste and our waste to landfill.

BT’s New Better Future Report – Just Out

The 2013 BT Better Future report is out and we are all very happy (and a little relieved too if truth be told).    It takes a lot of work from people across the business to collect all the data together,  validate it, decide how best to structure the report, design the web site to present it, create an executive  summary, create the input to the annual financial report and have all the data and the words externally validated.   This year we announced our new Better Future programme at the same time, so we also have a new web site

Limited Invitation to BT’s Net Good Launch Event in London

The Climate Group and Carbon Trust are joining BT to launch our Better Future Net Good programme in London on June 18th. I will be there to speak about the progamme together with our CEO, Ian Livingston, who is opening the event, and our CSO, Niall Dunne who will be closing it.  The Climate Group, Carbon Trust, Small World Consulting and many others will also be joining us at the event.

Employee Engagement Rules! Why Employees Are the Best Force for Change

Last week I delivered a presentation on BT’s Better Future programme at Georgetown University. My thanks to my friend and colleague Harriet Hentges who invited me in!   As always, I found it invigorating to present to a class of students, particularly students with experience under their belts.   The questions and comments that came during the session were challenging and thought provoking.    But I was sent an email from one of the students after the event that made me stop and think through where I should focus my efforts in order to best effect change.

A Sustainability Surge?

Over the last week or so I have had a taster of both how big and how small the world really is.

On Thursday the previous week I joined HP’s advisory board on corporate responsibility and sustainability, the HP External Global Citizenship Council.   I was honored to participate in a day and a half of stimulating discussions and insights.

Connecting the Dots

In preparation for an internal meeting this week I have been reviewing some reports that are going to send me home full of optimism tonight.

The Ecosystems Markets Task Force is a key commitment from the UK Government’s Natural Environment White Paper. The task force’s November 2012 interim report states right up front in the executive summary that “business depends on nature”; not just the harder nosed ‘resources’ word that I prefer to use  in a business context, but actually on ‘nature’. Task force membership includes the Chair/CEO and CFO’s from companies such as Kingfisher, United Utilities, Unilever and Jaguar/Land Rover.
